Tens of Thousands of Students Through the Decades
The JWI had a class that was offered to children between the ages of 3-5 called “Jazz for Tots.” It would take place at the Homewood Carnegie Library every Saturday from 12-1 pm. This class taught the children how to sing, dance, and play handheld instruments. Once the children were of age, or mature enough for more advanced classes, they were able to participate in formal lessons. Research studies have found that the earlier a student takes music lessons, the better it is for them to develop within this realm.
The classes at the Jazz Workshop, Inc. have historically consisted of individual lessons, i.e. trumpet, saxophone, trombone, drums, piano, and voice, etc. The lessons would take place from 1-3:30 every Saturday and from 3:30-4:30, the big band rehearsal would take place. These classes were located at the Carnegie Library in Homewood. Unfortunately, once the pandemic occurred, the library administrative structure changed, and it was decided to go in a different direction which would preclude the classes from occurring with any consistency. Therefore, the JWI program was adversely impacted. However, tens of thousands of individuals, generationally have benefited from the affordable music lessons.
The music lessons provided by The Jazz Workshop, Inc. have had a profound impact on the community. By offering accessible and affordable music education, we have empowered individuals from underserved backgrounds to develop their musical talents and express themselves creatively. Our lessons have fostered skills such as discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence, which extend beyond music and positively influence participants' academic and personal lives.
Through our programs, students gain exposure to jazz and other musical genres, enriching their cultural experiences and broadening their horizons. These lessons also contribute to community cohesion by bringing people together through shared musical experiences, performances, and events. Overall, our music education initiatives play a crucial role in nurturing local talent, preserving musical heritage, and strengthening the fabric of the community.
We are not currently offering music lessons at the library due to their restructured priorities. However, we do have a 3-story building that is in the process of being renovated. It is a great solid structure that needs a new roof, elevator, and other updates. Once completely renovated, we will be able to resume music lessons, big band rehearsals, jazz and poetry forums, and much more. It would be great to locate an interim location until the renovation is completed. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas!
